Money for nothing — Adam C. Hall

Do you remember the song "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits? It was the hit song on their 1985 album "Brothers in Arms." The lyrics followed with a very male thing, "chicks for free." I share this because we all know nothing is free; what is free is not "nothing." This month's theme speaks to money, wealth, and freedom.

For a long time, I thought money was freedom and wealth was power. While that may be true in the world in which we function on a daily basis, it is not true in our inner world. Outer power and freedom can easily own us. We create attachments to material "stuff" and expectations of others. This is a recipe for unhappiness, disease, and a vastly shortened life span. How do you expand on this limited mindset?

You flip the script. The wisdom traditions have long shared that nothing is everything. And having everything equals freedom; no attachments, no limitations, nothing but pure spirit.

Most of us would agree that money and wealth are not everything. True wealth (material + spiritual) includes this type of true freedom. I believe that you can have both material wealth and spiritual wealth when you chose to be liberated from attachment.

To accomplish this, I recommend making your spiritual nature the foundation of your wealth “home.” This way you can build material wealth on a rock solid foundation. I am finding that true freedom creates liberation from suffering. And that, my friends, means sovereignty and a new consciousness.
